What is Medical Acupuncture?

Medical Acupuncture is only to be used by medically qualified practitioners. The acupuncture techniques are based on a good working knowledge of the structure and function of the body. Essential features of medical acupuncture include an accepted methods of case history and examination including special tests to gain a diagnosis. the appropriate dosage of acupuncture tailored to the individual.

What happens during Medical Acupuncture Treatment?

When the needle is inserted in to the skin, a gentle pulse occurs the down the layers of the subcutaneous fat, fascia, then the muscle. Hopefully you will minimal pain. The needle can be manipulated once insertion has taken place where it is either sparrow pecking (lift and thrust) or rotated. The purpose is to cause a pulsation of a myofascial trigger point which will elicit a local twitch response. To elicit the twitch response of the myofascial tissues can reached with needle retention of a few seconds to 10 minutes.

What sort of Needles are used?

Acupuncture needles are typically made of stainless steel, making them flexible and preventing them from rusting or breaking. Needles are usually disposed of after each use to prevent contamination. The size of the needles much smaller than the size of the needles used for blood testing and injections. Therefore they are less painful.
