Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Cambridge Manual Lymphatic Drainage Clinic

We are a Cambridge manual lymphatic drainage clinic located in central Cambridge and Waterbeach. Treatment is provided by an experienced osteopath.

What is Manual Lympathic Drainage?

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a type of massage based on preliminary evidence which is hypothesized to encourage the natural drainage of the lymph, which carries waste products away from the tissues back toward the heart. The lymph system depends on intrinsic contractions of the smooth muscle cells in the walls of lymph vessels (peristalsis) and the movement of skeletal muscles to propel lymph through the vessels to lymph nodes and then to the lymph ducts which return lymph to the cardiovascular system.

How can Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) massage help?

MLD uses very light, rhythmical hand circular movements at skin level to stimulate the direction and flow of lymph fluid to drain into venous circulation. It is effective in moving and removing excess fluid and toxins from cell tissues without first bringing an extra load to the area in the form of blood circulation (standard ‘heavy’ massage influences lymph drainage by increasing circulation of blood to the area being massaged but this would not be suitable for someone with a compromised lymphatic system).

What Conditions can Manual Lymphatic Drainage be used for?

Extensive lymphedemas of the limb

Hematoma and post-fracture treatment

 Rheumatic disorders

Contraindications to Treatment

Cancer –  MLD in cancer patients is a controversial topic as the treatment is claimed to reduce lymphodema in various cancers, though the treatment could potentially increase your risk of metastasis, whether the cancer spreads across the body via the lymphatic system. Therefore it is inadviseable to undergo this sort of treatment whilst suffering with cancer.

Thyroid dysfunction

Chronic inflammation

Bronchial asthma

Hypotension

Edema caused by cardiac decompensation should not be drained manually, as this may exacerbate such decompensation

Diabetes
