What is a Cervicogenic Headache?
Cervicogenic headache originates from disorders of the neck, including the anatomical structures innervated by the cervical roots C1–C3. Cervical headache is often precipitated by neck movement and/or sustained awkward head positioning.
It is often accompanied by restricted cervical range of motion, ipsilateral neck, shoulder, or arm pain of a rather vague non-radicular nature or, occasionally, arm pain of a radicular nature. It usually presents as a one sided headache.
This type of headache can be accompanied with neck pain or the suffer has had a history of neck pain previously when neck pain presently absent during the current episodes of headaches.
What Causes a Cervicogenic Headache?
This headache is caused neck extensor muscle tightness and neck flexor muscle weakness that results in the compression of the joints and nerves in the upper part of the neck.
How can we help?
The aim of treatment is to reduce the nerve compression around the base of the head and upper neck to reduce the referred pain to the base the head. This involves treating the joints, muscles and other soft tissues around those areas.
We can use manipulative amd mobilisation techniques to improve the mobility of the joints of the upper neck and soft tissues techniques to reduce the the tightness of the neck extensor muscles and decompress the cervical roots C1-C3.
It likely we can prescribe exercises and provide medical acupuncture for the headache as well.
