What is Pregnancy & Antenatal Massage?

The massage is applied to the low back and pelvis to reduced muscle tension and joint pain.

Perineal Massage is not offered as part of the massage treatment. This involves massaging the perineum – the area between the vagina and anus – in the last weeks of pregnancy has been shown to reduce the likelihood of tearing during birth, and of needing stitches or an episiotomy. You can do it alone, or your partner can do it with or for you.

Why Might you need a Pregnancy & Antenatal Massage?

Pregnancy can have an impact on your posture as the body undergoes a lot changes including the growth of the breasts and Uterus, abdominal muscle stretching (due to baby growth), nerves may become compressed with the baby moves as the baby grows or shifts position, pelvic joints and ligaments loose and can become strained. This can presdispose you pregnancy related back pain, pelvic pain and shoulder girdle pain.

Pregnancy massage uses light, gentle techniques to promote deep relaxation and relieve muscular tension and pain. The treatment and application of techniques can be adapted to your needs.

Is it Safe?

It can be applied in all trimesters, but it most effective during the 3rd trimester of pregnancy. Though during the first trimester (up to 12 weeks), it might wise to seek the opinion of your GP or OB & GYNE consultant to reduce any potential risk of miscarriage. Particularly mothers who experience high levels of pain during pregnancy may be at an increased risk of complications during labour.
